50 years Benen-Diken-Hof

April 16, 2023 . Sylt . Keitum

The BENEN-DIKEN-HOF is 50 years old.

Easter 1973 . 15 April Sara and Claas Johannsen open their BENEN-DIKEN-HOF together, the farm behind the dikes; a hotel garni with 18 rooms. Sara Johannsen takes over the management of the hotel, Claas Johannsen continues to take care of his haulage business. And around the hotel bar. Here he invents the legendary »twisted Jever«, which he »pours« into cognac snifters for his guests. A ritual that is still a special feature of bar events today.

A barn built in 1950 becomes a hotel. A small extension connects it to the historic captain’s house from 1841, which is still the home of the Johannsen family today.

The BENEN-DIKEN-HOF is an »island on an island« right from the start –
a retreat for guests looking for relaxation on Sylt, a private Frisian world under thatch. A special attraction for that time is the heated 8 x 4 m swimming pool.

White houses under thatch, frieze walls and white garden gates, the large meadows where the lambs graze in summer – this is how the BENEN-DIKEN-HOF welcomes its guests. In 1973 the foundation stone was laid for today’s courtyard. Much has been carefully expanded, changed and updated since then. Much is as it always was, like Sara and Claas Johannsen had planned from day one: there is always light in the house, someone is always there to greet the guests, they are always greeted by a cozy warmth, and breakfast is always served until midday.
