THE EXHIBITION . Bernd Berner. Origin Colour

Monday – Friday . 09:00 – 18:00

From 12 October 2021, “Van Ham Art Estate” will be our guest with the exhibition “Bernd Berner. Ursprung Farbe” will be our guest. This highlight of the Sylt Art Autumn will be on display until 30 April 2022. The “Van Ham Art Estate” looks after the estate of the painter and graphic artist Bernd Berner, who is one of the most important representatives of abstract painting in German post-war modernism. The Hamburg-born artist became famous for his expressive monochrome and meditative “surface spaces” from the 1950s to the 2000s.

The exhibition in the gallery corridor of the Benen-Diken-Hof Hotel comprises 40 paintings by the painter from the 1990s and 2000s. In his work, Bernd Berner deals intensively with the themes of surface – colour – space and develops extremely reduced means of expression in his seemingly monochrome colour spaces: he achieves a pulsating effect through nuanced and differentiated superimposition and condensation of the “surface spaces”, which he accentuates with traces and disturbances. The gesture of the “surface spaces”, whose strong luminous to pastel shades achieve a lively atmosphere, appears open and expressive. In his linear colour writing he “weaves” the layers of painting into a whole, which he accentuates with drops of colour. In this way he cancels out the two-dimensionality of the painting and gives it a spatial depth.

About the artist Bernd Berner
Bernd Berner was born in Hamburg in 1930. After training as a lithographer from 1949 to 1951, he moved to Stuttgart and came into contact with Willi Baumeister. Baumeister’s art, as well as that of Fernand Léger, influenced his autodidactic exploration of painting. In 1957 he worked on his first scriptural condensations; the following year he was awarded the Stuttgart Youth Art Prize. From 1960 onwards, he exhibited his works at home and abroad in Europe and in the USA. It was at this time that he finally began his surface painting. In addition, from 1963 onwards he also created an extensive oeuvre of prints (lithographs, serigraphs, etchings). Together with Klaus Jürgen-Fischer, Eduard Micus, Erwin Bechtold and Rolf-Gunter Dienst, he founded the group SYN in 1965 (until 1970). In 1967 he was awarded the Villa Romana Prize and lived in Florence for a year. From 1971 to 1994 he taught as a professor of painting at the Fachhochschule für Gestaltung in Pforzheim. His works can be found in the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, the Nationalgalerie Berlin and the Kunstmuseum Wiesbaden. Bernd Berner died in Stuttgart in 2002.

VAN HAM Art Estate has been looking after the artistic estate of Bernd Berner since 2016, which consists of paintings and works on paper in series. An online catalogue raisonné is available to the public. The written estate is located in the German Art Archive at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum Nürnberg (GNM).
